Yogyakarta, a special district, is one of the many cultural tourist destinations in Central Java. Recently, Yogyakarta has given an international exposure for its mounting volcanic activity shown by the world’s most active volcano, the Merapi, some 30 km (45 miles) from Yogyakarta. However, the quake is not a volcano-related one.

People fled from their houses since the shake was ominous and caused severe damages in many residential areas. Old people and children were found dead in the remnants of the buildings, unable to immediately escape from their houses. Around 60 kilometers from Yogyakarta, a small peaceful town called Bantul, was also badly shaken by the quake, making its residents fled to a higher platform after being told that a tsunami may hit the town. In fact, the worst damages occured in Bantul.

At 10.15 a.m., a second mild shake was felt in Yogyakarta. Many still think and relate the earthquake with the Merapi Volcano, currently discharging hot clouds and sulfuric dust. The Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Bureau reported that the quake was purely tectonic, unrelated to the volcanic activities in the province. The bureau also told that there are no indications of a potential tsunami.

The Adi Sucipto International Airport is temporarily closed. There was a power loss happened in the city and its surroundings, causing several vital public services to momentarily pause, including a hospital and the airport.

Yogyakarta is a town known for its friendly people, rich cultural assets, exquisite Batik producers, and the Borobudur and Prambanan temples. The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Yudhoyono, expressed his deepest condolence for the casualties and their families. Until now, there are no reports of tourists being injured in the earthquake.

Should you have any further information, please share it with us.

Information by: Angke in Leisure Multimedia, Bandung, West Java, Indonesia.
Source: Televisions and radios
creating image with balanced and accurate communication channels
